Introduction by Jack Hines
“This volume, housing a comprehensive collection of the art of Eyvind Earle, is a celebration of unique individualism.
In this day and age of art, both traditional and avant-garde painters tend to work within structured boundaries of sameness. It has not been different in the past…except for a few outstanding artists whose person, whose inner being and whose separate perceptions reach into the realm of visual poetry. They have created images so distinctive and so riveting as to require no signature, the artist’s identity being implicit in the work. It is a quality that goes beyond style, that vagrant and fugitive superficial device which too often disguises fundamental inadequacy.
Some artists seize upon a theme and beat it into submission. Eyvind Earle takes his inspiration from the common surrounding element of most lives, landscapes, and lifts it in sensitive hands. Caressing it into shimmering but powerful visions which transcend reality, design and technique.
What emerge are masterworks which burn with the heat of their own purity. The gift is a rare one, granted parsimoniously to few individuals. Some of the lucky recipients coast through their creative lives on the strength of the gift alone. Eyvind Earle has taken that original mystic power and built upon it over years of study. Self-examination and productivity, molding the monumental talent which has produced the work you will experience in this book.
My years of admiration of and devotion to this artist nearly equal those of his productive life. I continue to stand in awe of his ability to reshape the perfection of nature into a newly realized perfection. His is an art that is a product of the totality of the man, with each piece becoming an exotic and beautifully surreal place of its own…one that could not exist without the force of his hand and soul.
Earle’s command of beautiful, simplified shapes, dominant in each composition, is enhanced by the sensitivity with which he embroiders textual richness and elements of contrasting scale. All are bathed in liquid-jewel color.
His is a freedom of creative concept which carries both artist and viewer into gorgeous lands that never were, nor ever will be, other than in the images you will witness here.
Eyvind Earle has been termed “An artist for the 21st century.” I am certain this is true, but for me the remark contains a chronological flaw. An artist of this stature is, as is truly fine art itself, beyond the boundaries of time…past, present or future.”
